Challenge the Dark:

Enroll in Night (Design) School

Calling all civic leaders: Are you ready to create a vibrant nighttime identity for your city?

What is Night (Design) School?

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s famous quote says, “Night is the other half of life, and the better half.” However, many urban dwellers return to their homes when the sun sets, especially in the winter.

How can civic leaders make night the better half? Imagine a different urban nighttime where your city becomes more vibrant at dusk because citizens feel safe and welcomed.

That is why Leni Schwendinger created Night (Design) School, a multi-month peer support program that activates civic leaders to elevate their communities through well-designed nighttime lighting strategies.

Night (Design) School consists of two components:

1

Create Your City's Night Vision:

a structured two-day workshop to identify strengths and weaknesses after dark. For example, is downtown dead or overly alive? How established are your co-benefits at night (safety, public health, economic vitality)? Each issue will be explored. At the end of the two-day peer-to-peer session, participants will walk away with a vision statement.

2

Night (Design) School:

After completing Your City’s Night Vision, participants have the foundation to begin implementing the vision statement. This takes place over multiple months with peer group support, guest speakers and of course, nighttime design leader, Leni.

Activating cities at night benefits citizens, businesses, shift workers, and local government. Transformative nighttime design is within reach.
